In office 365 environment we require the assistance of Dirsync ( Directory synchronization) to sync your on premise Active directory objects with Cloud Azure directory and also need to Deploy ADFS ( Active Directory Federation Service ) to provide single sign-on feature where in user can use the same password they use for on premise to access the cloud resources.
Microsoft has updated the Dir sync and with the latest version they have introduced a new addition called Password hash which provides the same functionality of having the same password to access the cloud resources with out having ADFS implementation on the environment which is a complex setup
For single sign-on you still require to deploy ADFS and also this provides some additional benefits than password hash.
