Microsoft has introduced policy-driven update approvals in Windows Autopatch, allowing IT teams to choose which updates are approved automatically and which require manual review.
Microsoft targeted October 15, 2026, for rollout completion. Administrators can check their Microsoft Intune admin center for availability.
Scope clarification: These Windows Autopatch capabilities apply to eligible Windows client devices managed through Microsoft Intune. Windows Server operating systems are not supported by these Intune-based Autopatch policies and require separate server patch management solutions, such as Azure Update Manager or Microsoft Configuration Manager.

Three Important Things to Know
1. Pausing doesn't mean rolling back.
Pausing an update prevents further deployment but doesn't remove it from devices where installation has already completed. Microsoft notes that a pause can take up to eight hours to reach devices.
2. Hotpatch requires careful planning.
When hotpatch is enabled, devices won't receive approved non-security updates because installing them would interrupt the hotpatch servicing path. Administrators must disable hotpatch in the quality update policy to deploy those updates.
3. Approval methods cannot be changed after policy creation.
Switching between automatic and manual approval requires creating a new policy. This makes the initial policy design important.
