AzureAD Pass-Through Authentication and Seamless Single Sign-on Public Preview

When Organization plan to make their move to Office 365, they need to decide on the right Identity model they are going to adopt and make proper planning for Integrating their existing infrastructure with the Cloud.

Currently we can choose from three main identity models in Office 365,

Cloud identity: Manage your user accounts in Office 365 only. No on-premises servers are required to manage users; it's all done in the cloud.

Synchronized identity: Synchronize on-premises directory objects with Office 365 and manage your users on-premises. You can also synchronize passwords so that the users have the same password on-premises and in the cloud, but they will have to sign in again to use Office 365.

Federated identity: Synchronize on-premises directory objects with Office 365 and manage your users on-premises. The users have the same password on-premises and in the cloud, and they do not have to sign in again to use Office 365. This is often referred to as single sign-on.

Read in-detail here: Understanding Office 365 identity and Azure Active Directory

Read the below article to know how to Integrate Office 365 with your existing directory services

Most Large Enterprise Customers have adopted the federated Identity Model for SSO and also to meet their complex business requirements, and for other customers who need to have SSO with Office 365 and also want their passwords to stay on-premises, we now have a good news from Microsoft, you have the new "Azure AD Pass-Through Authentication and Seamless Single Sign-on" available and now both are in public preview.

Pass-Through Authentication and Seamless Single Sign-on features are added to Azure AD Connect, These new capabilities allow customers to securely and simply integrate their on-premises identity infrastructure with Azure AD. You are no longer required to have a complex Setup like AD FS to achieve SSO.

Azure Active Directory V2 PowerShell module GA

Earlier this Month Microsoft announced the General Availability of Azure Active Directory PowerShell 2.0 module, To maintain equivalent capabilities between Microsoft Graph API and PowerShell cmdlets, all these new cmdlets are built on top of the Graph API.

Two important notes from Product Team below to keep in mind:

  • The new Azure AD PowerShell v2.0 module don’t provide full functional parity with the older MSOL module yet. We’re working hard to make that happen in the coming months and will keep you updated on our progress.
  • We are not planning to publish new functionality in the MSOL PowerShell module. Over time we will implement all the functionality of the old MSOL cmdlets in the new module, and this new module contains quite a few new cmdlets that haven’t been available before.

Access the Official Blog post here: AzureAD PowerShell V2.0 is now GA

You can Check the release notes and download the Module from PowerShell Gallery here: Azure Active Directory V2 PowerShell Module - General Availability Release 2.0.0.33

Follow the instructions to install the module according to your Operating System.

Make sure you review all the new cmdlets here : Azure Active Directory V2 PowerShell module

You can install the new PS Module in your pre-production or Test environment and see how the new V2 cmdlets work in comparison with V1 cmdlets, and once V2 cmdlets have equivalent capabilities as V1 cmdlets you can start update your existing scripts accordingly.

Microsoft Certification Updates!!!

Microsoft team released five new Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) and Developer (MCSD) specialties.  These credentials are aligned to Centers of Excellence, used by the Microsoft Partner Network to identify technical competencies that are widely recognizable by both Microsoft partners and customers.

The five new expert certifications are:

  • MCSE: Cloud Platform and Infrastructure - focusing on skills validation for Windows Server and Microsoft Azure
  • MCSE: Mobility - focusing on skills validation for Windows Client and Enterprise Mobility Suite
  • MCSE: Data Management and Analysis - focusing on skills validation for both on-premises and cloud-based Microsoft data products and services
  • MCSE: Productivity - focusing on skills validation for Office 365, SharePoint, Exchange, and Skype for Business
  • MCSD: App Builder - focusing on skills validation for Web and Mobile app development
To earn each of these credentials, you must first earn a qualifying Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) certification and, then, pass a single additional exam from a list of electives associated with the corresponding Center of Excellence.

The resulting MCSE or MCSD certification will be added to your transcript and will never expire.  Instead, the achievement date will signify your investment in continuing education on the technology.  Every year, you will have the opportunity to re-earn the certification by passing an additional exam from the list of electives, demonstrating your investment in broadening or deepening your skills in a given Center of Excellence.  Each time you earn the certification, a new certification entry will be added to your transcript.  This process will replace the existing recertification requirement  of taking a specific recertification exam every 2 years (MCSD) or 3 years (MCSE) in order to prevent your certification from going inactive.

Also the existing MCSE and MCSD exams will be retired on March 31, 2017.

Access the Born To Learn blog post here to know more in detail: Microsoft Streamlines Technical Certifications

If you have already earned the required certifications, Microsoft team is aligning you to the new road-map as updated in the blog post, and if you are in the mid of your Certification Journey, then this is the right time to earn an MCSA certification and choose the appropriate elective exam and gain your MCSE / MCSD certification. Be sure to remember that you need to continue your learning and pass one of the elective exam every calendar year to re-earn the certification to keep your certification status current.

This new change has created mixed reviews in the Community, review the comments section of the Blog post to know the questions raised by fellow community members and answered by Microsoft, Submit your questions to get it clarified. Since this is the beginning we can see more updates to come in the next few days.
